I received an email yesterday. It was submitted via the contact page on this site. I'm not even interested in whether they used a real or fake email address and name. The whole premise of the email was it is unethical to take advantage of the coming situations caused by out of control government spending and irresponsible government debt.

Here is part of the text of the email:

We are in a world crisis, it don't matter who created it, we are in it. The current debt here in America is an unfortunate necessity. When President Obama came into office the crisis was already raging and Bush had already charted the course we are on to spend government money to prevent a world wide depression. The debt will be fixed by responsible tax policy. It is going to shared in a progressive and proportionate way across everyone. We are all in this together.

I'm apalled you would advocate taking advantage of your fellow American and world citizens in this time of crisis. This is a time of sacrifice not a time to line our pockets with easy and very dirty money. You should be looking for ways we can grow and expand our economy. That will increase tax money and reduce the debt. Then we can all share in the American dream you are trying to destroy.

Interesting, no? I didn't know I had so much power.

Seriously, I couldn't destroy anyone's American Dream even if I wanted to do it. Government can and is for millions with its policies.

But, let's cut to the chase.

  • I didn't cause the out of control spending emanating from Washington and state governments.
  • I didn't cause the deficit to more than double since Obama took office.
  • I didn't cause the circumstances allowing the housing, credit and consumer spending bubbles to form.
  • I didn't cause the circumstances causing them to pop either.
  • I didn't cause government to try to prevent those bubbles from popping and temporarily propping them up.
  • I didn't cause the explosion of debt that will result from that intervention.
  • I didn't cause the Federal Reserve to explode the money supply and keep interest rates artificially low.
  • I didn't cause the resulting inflation that will result from that monetary policy.
  • I didn't cause the policies that will keep our unemployment rate in the double digits as has been the case in Europe for more than 30 years.
  • I didn't cause the coming interest rates in the double digits we will see in a few years.

In fact, the only thing I am guilty of is recognizing what is happening and what will be the likely outcome. And I can assure you, I am not alone in that situation.

Then given that simple fact, I have choices. I can choose to act and profit from it or I can bury my head in the same and hope the change will not destroy me, my family and our financial lives. I can also choose to keep this to myself, or share it with others.

I have made my choice and ultimately everyone will make theirs.

Someone is going to profit from the irresponsibility of government they did not cause and cannot prevent. Will you be one of them?
