The Collection Letter
Sometimes you will get a call first, sometimes you get the letter first. It doesn't matter that much what order they arrive, you will probably get both. A letter from a collection agency requires immediate action. If it is from the collection department of your creditor, it is less of an issue.

This is usually near the end of a lender's passive-aggressive phase. They have probably been sending you increasingly strong wording on statements or separate letters. Now, you get one from the collections department.
